A Middle School Introduction To Global Marketing Using Online Blended Entrepreneurship Education

By Linda Cook

Most educators are embracing technology and using it to their advantage. As business models change they are also coming to the conclusion that the principles of entrepreneurship should be taught as well. Middle schoolers can get an early idea of the way the corporate world works using online blended entrepreneurship education for 6th grade and on.

These courses combine in-class with online instruction. Students participate in projects aimed at giving them insight into the basics of global economics. The first lessons address business concepts and how they relate to customers. Ethical conduct is defined. Students are given hypothetical business scenarios and asked to decide whether or not the conduct of the business people constitutes ethical or unethical conduct.

Culture and business is the subject of one lesson. Students watch a video that introduces them to the different ways people greet each other around the world. Terminology is discussed. There is some discussion about how international businesses adjust their messages to adapt to different cultures as a way of providing service to customers while still making a profit.

Global trade is the focus of one lesson. Students learn how countries decide to trade with other countries instead of depending on their own resources for everything they need. Children are taught the ways in which technology has affected global trade. They play trading games and use the information they have learned to try and convince their peers to purchase products.

Not every country has the necessary resources to supply citizens with all their needs. Specialization can create a more stable economy. Students are encouraged to participate in games that demonstrate the ways this benefits a country. Teachers lead discussions about how the business decisions of one country affects customers in the global marketplace.

Trade barriers is the subject of a lesson. Students watch a video that explains what tariffs are, gives pertinent examples, and explains how all of this affects the balance of trade. They have discussions about what happens to businesses, customers, and employees when they are faced with trade barriers. They discuss why the balance of trade matters.

Kids love the international currency portion of this course. They learn about the different currencies and what the rate of exchange means. They are taught why currencies have different values. Students are given currency calculators and taught how to use them and how to calculate exchange rates. They learn about the ways exchange rates affect buying power.

The global workforce, and what is means for the future, is discussed. Students learn how corporations are using modern technology to find the most qualified applicants around the world. They discuss the merits of learning a second language and what steps students would have to take to become successful in a global economy. Students must use language, math, social skill sets, and science to figure out how to resolve global economic issues. These lessons are invaluable for future success.
