Looking For And Buying Record Player Needles

By John Sanders

Many people collect and enjoy listening to vinyl records and will use a deck to play music on. CD's, mp3 players and internet streaming are now very popular and buying parts for turntables is sometimes tricky. When you are trying to source record player needles there are a few places to find a supplier after a little research.

A high quality stylus is an extremely important part of your record deck due to the fact that it translates the music from the grooves in the record into audible sound. A very old or badly damaged needle will never produce a good quality audio and it could also damage to your valuable records. There are many types of stylus and it very important to find a well established supplier when you are ordering and buying.

A good place to start searching for a replacement needle is one of the professional audio dealers that are to be found in most towns and cities. Most of these retailers will have a comprehensive selection of styluses for newer decks and some older models. If they do not have what you are looking for they will often be able to place an order for one from a manufacturer.

Internet retailers are also worth checking out and there are a lot of web based suppliers to choose from. Before you place an online order, you will need a serial number or manufacturer name to make it easier to search through their lists of stock. If you cannot find the technical information, many of the web retailers will take an emailed photo of your stylus and try to find a match.

If a store or internet retailer cannot help you, it can be worth looking at an internet auction site. Many of the sites will have needles in their auctions and you can make an offer or place a bid. If you are unsure about an item you wish to bid on, you can contact the seller to ask for more details, before you commit.

Manufacturers can also be worth contacting by email and a large number of them will be able to supply you with a replacement stylus. If your turntable is no longer made, they may still have older parts in stock, including needles. If they are not able to find you a stylus, they may be able to recommend a retailer where you may find one.

It is always better to use a manufacturer original needle where possible. Aftermarket items are widely available and will usually do the job but some care should be taken when using non original parts. If you are buying from a high street store it is worth taking along your old needle so that comparisons can be made.

A record player stylus fragile and it needs to be properly cared for to avoid damage. Unless you are using it immediately after purchase, it should be stored in the box until it is needed. Retain all bills and invoices which will be needed if you need to exchange a stylus or claim a refund on an item.
