Know More About The Functions Of Lighting For Heliport

By Richard Taylor

For the past three decades we have seen a growing number of helicopters. The problem arises in where they have to land since they used to use airports. Special places have been created so that they ease the congestion that may be experienced in the airports. These areas are called heliports, and they have lights that play a critical role in these places; hence, the need for lighting for heliport.

The installing and working of these lights has a direct bearing with those of airports. They work the same. However, FAA, the body that regulates these areas, wanted particular lights to be well designed for heliports be used instead of the previous ones. This move led to many firms coming up with a variety of lights that are in the market today.

As earlier mentioned, these devices are installed to ensure all the activities in these stoppages go smoothly this adds up to making the place safe. FAA is frequently mandated to ensure the construction of such areas and installation of these gadgets meets the set standards. The firms that opted to be the producers of these devices still have to be permitted by the same body.

The variety of these gadgets that can be found in a single stoppage bay are many, and each has its unique role that it plays. One of them is the touchdown and lift off area light that frequently provides a clear visibility in the event in bad weather like rain and fog. The beacon plays the exactly same role, but it is used for long distance visibility.

The intensity of taking off or landing is imperative in ensuring safety. This is why there is the high perimeter light that has two sharp glares of green and yellow so that it gives the pilot an indication of the threshold of taking off or landing. The winding cone typically shows the approach or direction that need to be taken when entering or leaving the area.

The outdoor controller that is the most critical of all other devices since it controls how all of them operate. It is the one time switch that puts all the lights on and off. It is well designed to work in extreme weather conditions like the rain. It has however been less useful since latest systems operate automatically without any help from this device. It can only be used in rare situations.

The position where these devices need to be installed must be well selected. This is because they must be such that they give the pilot an excellent view of them. Common areas of installation include the taxiways and the settling position of the chopper while landing among many others. If this is well observed then chances of errors or any other sort o0f inconvenience becomes minimal.

To conclude is important to mention about the technology that these lights use. FAA has approved the use of the electroluminescent, LED, laser bars, fiber optics, and the commonly used cathode ray tubes. These systems have been of great help since very few people are nowadays used to man these areas. Additionally, they are more reliable than people since they are less prone to errors, and they work automatically.
