Guidelines For Selecting Oilfield Fishing Tools

By Barbara Collins

There are high chances of losing drilling tools in an oilfield. Such situations require the use of fishing devices to retrieve the tools from the oil pit. The choice of instrument depends on the lost fish, where it is, its shape, the extent of damage and its form. Each type of device has a unique craft that makes it suitable for a specific usage. The following are guidelines for selecting oilfield fishing tools to think through.

External fishing tools. These kinds of equipment recover items down home using threading directed from outside the surface. It engages the fish from its outer diameter and holds it from its external surface. It has a pulling device that pulls the exposed fingers of a fish from extremely trashy wells. Products that fall under this section include the coiled tubing knuckle, mechanical releasable spear, and a hydraulic pulling tool.

Internal catching devices. These kinds of devices engage the entire junk from its interior. It works similarly to the external catching tools by grappling, but with this one, its grapples at the inside surface. These kinds of devices have a bumper jar that helps in the engagement process and disengaging the junk as well. They have a non-releasable device that has a safety joint that provides emergency disconnect when the junk fails to pull free.

Junk retrieval devices. These kinds of devices remove debris from the oil pit. They use magnetism or use of a junk basket when retrieving the fish. Most junks extracted using these devices are usually broken into pieces. Some of the standard junk retrieval gears include the junk magnet, wireline spear, junk basket, and the impression block.

Devices used in cutting and milling. These devices have a mechanism that mills and grind the fish into small pieces to make them easy to retrieve. They include devices such as strip taper mills, connebuster and other types of devices. Their usage depends on whether the fish is lightweight or are heavyweight. Also, the shape and size of the junks can also affect its retrieval using these devices.

Devices used as fixtures. Particular fixtures work with the internal and external tackles to make them useful. These gears include the bumpers, jars, jar amplifier, and the whipstock. Devices such as the whipstock deflect the fish from its original location for more comfortable fishing. The jar impact amplifier has a piston that use the hydraulic or mechanical technique to provide the jarring power.

Gears used in remedial and repair. The devices retrieved from an oil pit need repair and corrective to regain their usage. Therefore, one should consider using the corrective and repair tools which maintain the roundness and diameter of the respective devices. They can also patch the casing of the damaged instrument. Typical devices that are in this category include the casing rollers and the tubing scrappers.

Risks and opportunities. Particular aspects affect the overall value of the junks before retrieval. This includes the fishing insurance, standby and the personnel used in this process. An insurance coverage ensures that there are enough finances to cater to the costs incurred while retrieving these junks. Having a standby service provides that retrieval happens immediately.
